Peckham Rye Park and Common is managed by Southwark Council and comprises 96.3 acres of open recreational grassland, ornamental and water gardens, a lake and woodland. It is located one mile south of Peckham Rye rail station.

Access: Vehicles to the Strakers Road car park, off Peckham Rye East. Buses: Peckham Rye West 12, 63, 363, 312. Peckham Rye East 343, 484, 78, P12.

The Park is for the use and enjoyment of the general public and Peckham Rye Park is unique in that it has so many areas of interest. The large open spaces are often used by young people to play football, both organised matches and friends enjoying a general kick about. It is also especially popular for dog walkers as dogs can run around with new found freedom from the concrete jungle around and about.
There is a lovely picnic area under the trees with tables and benches. The paths are a haven for joggers away from the traffic and the ornamental gardens and woodland areas are calm havens just for a leisurely walk after a long day at work. The lake with ducks and geese is especially popular with the children.

They meet every Tuesday at 11am opposite the Waverly School entrance. This is a fun/social/fitness walk for all ages and levels of fitness.

Rye Park Bowling Club

Nestling in the centre of the Park is the Bowling Green, and on a sunny summer afternoon it is wonderful to sit on a park bench and watch that age old game of rolling bowls. Peckham Rye Park Bowling Club was opened in 1910 and over the years has become very successful drawing many excellent players. John Collier, one of the founder members, started a league which is still played today and 'The John Collier Shield' is an important fixture for most of the South London club members.

The green used to have a beautiful wooden club house which was unfortunately burnt down by an arsonist in the early 90's and since then the Club had to make do with an unattractive lock-up. Thanks to Roy Taylor and Edith Hill of Southwark Council the lost bowls were replaced. One of the main features of the current restoration was a brand new pavilion for the Bowling Club. This photo is all that remains of the lovely new building. Hardly had the Park been re-opened when the building was vandalised and burnt down again. This photo will one day be a historical momento as it is probably one of the only ones to be taken of the new but never used pavilion!

There is now consultation with the Council as to what can be built in its place that is vandal proof and may also be used by other clubs in the Park.

The Dog Walkers
All dogs need at least one walk a day, whatever the season, come rain or shine. It is no surprise therefore that dog walkers make up the majority of the Park's population of users at any given time. A group of them meet with their dogs in the early evening after work on the second field from the main entrance. Anyone new to the area with a dog will find it a good way to meet fellow dog walkers and exchange news and views on the Park. As such frequent users of the Park the dog walkers can also keep an eye out for any suspicious activities or anti social behaviour. Nowadays anyone using the Park should carry a mobile phone so that the appropriate authorities can be called if needed.

Problems in the Park
It is a sad fact of todays society that there are a few individuals who do not appreciate the beauty of the Park and are determined to spoil it for the majority. In the summer school holidays when the majority of people want to use the Park, vandalism is at its worst. The bowling green and the Sexby Garden seem to be a focal area for the worst of the destruction. Any anti social behaviour must be reported immediately to the park warden service:

emergency phone number 020 7525 2777

Also the Peckham Safer Neighbourhood police service can be contacted on

peckhamrye.snt@met.police.uk
